Times are though in South Africa for tradesmen like roofing and waterproofing contractors who are not permanently employed and with our current economy it’s getting more and more difficult to get employed. Even if you’re highly qualified in a specific trade most of the times companies are more interested in a individual who has experience as well. After all who can blame them. It’s one thing to know the theory but a whole other ballgame doing the practical. So what’s the solution to this problem? Let’s take a look.
If you are the owner of a roof repairs and waterproofing company it’s easier to generate an income for yourself as an entrepreneur. All you need to do is find reliable roofing and waterproofing contractors to do the manual labor, get a really good marketing company to generate sales leads and you’re good to go. Now obviously you would need to know how to sell roofing and waterproofing to a client, solve their rain water damage problems and quote accurately not as to burn your fingers. The contractors you hire also needs to have at least 4 years experience with client references so that you can take a look at the quality workmanship they deliver. You don’t want to hire a waterproofing contractor and sit with comebacks later.
So what makes it more profitable to have your own roofing and waterproofing business? Let’s say you hire sub contractors do do your roof repairs and waterproofing projects. They usually quote you per project. A sub contractor will work out what he needs to pay his guys who help him with doing projects plus the petrol he uses and then also what he himself needs to make per day. The average standard daily rate I find currently stands at about R1,500 per day to hire a sub contractor with two guys helping him. Now I know that if a roof repairs project is going to take 3 days to complete I need to build in a fee of R4,500 for a sub contractor. On average roof repairs or waterproofing project that take 3 days to complete I quote R18,000 – R20,000. The cost of materials on a project such as this would be roughly 50% of the total amount. This means that after you’ve subtracted the sub contractors fee and materials you could possible make R5,000 in your pocket per 3 day project. Now this might not sound that lucritive but when you have 3 or 4 teams out there that amount became allot more attractive.
So running your own roof repairs and waterproofing company is far more profitable then actually doing the work yourself of being employed by a company. This why you also ad value to the economy and generate work instead of being a worker.
